Aram Khachaturian's Adventures of Ivan in Bangkok, Thailand: how Golf goes from Sabre Dance to easy children's pieces and finds the highest note before his AI piano lessons

Golf is ten and lives in Bangkok, Thailand, in a townhouse near a canal where long-tail boats pass every few minutes. At a school sports day, the band played a wild, galloping tune while the relay runners sprinted, and the whole crowd clapped along to the beat. Golf's music teacher later told him its name, Sabre Dance, by Aram Khachaturian.

Khachaturian was born in 1903 in Tbilisi, in today's Georgia, to an Armenian family. As a boy he loved the folk music that filled the streets around him, played by street musicians and at family celebrations. Surprisingly, he had almost no formal music training until he was about nineteen, when he moved to Moscow and enrolled at the Gnessin institute.

He started late, yet he caught up fast. He learned cello and composition, later studied at the Moscow Conservatory, and soon wrote a Piano Concerto that became popular internationally. His music mixes the strong rhythms and decorated melodies of Armenian folk song with the full colours of the symphony orchestra.

Sabre Dance comes from his ballet Gayane, first performed in 1942. In the story, Armenian villagers perform a dance with swords, and Khachaturian's music bursts with repeated notes, thumping drums and a squealing saxophone line. It became a worldwide hit, recorded by dance bands and used in cartoons, adverts and figure skating routines.

Khachaturian also wrote the ballet Spartacus, whose slow Adagio became widely known through television. He conducted his own music around the world, taught composition in Moscow, and is still celebrated in Armenia, where a museum in Yerevan is dedicated to him.

An Armenian sound from Tbilisi

Golf discovered that the same composer wrote gentle music for children: Adventures of Ivan, also known as the first book of his Children's Album. Its miniatures describe a boy's day, with titles such as Ivan Sings and Ivan Can't Go Out Today. Golf liked that the boy in the music has ordinary problems, like being stuck inside on a rainy afternoon.

He began piano lessons on TIGA ALPHA after his parents saw an advertisement for the online piano learning app during school holidays. The AI piano teacher listens through the laptop, colours each note and shows a short replay of any bar that went wrong. He enjoys how it turns long pieces into short goals he can finish in a single evening.

Golf picks out the highest note on the page and works out which finger will reach it, long before the music starts climbing. In Ivan Sings, the tune rises like a voice reaching for an important word, and he once ran out of fingers right at the top. Planning that moment has made the phrase feel natural.

Another piece, Ivan Can't Go Out Today, has become his rainy-season favourite. Its melody sounds a little gloomy, like a boy pressing his nose against a window, and Golf plays it whenever a storm traps him indoors. He has learned that slower music needs patience in the fingers, because every note is exposed and there is nowhere for a careless sound to hide.

His mother has noticed a change in his habits as well. Golf used to rush homework so he could watch videos, but now he rushes homework so he can practise. She jokes that Khachaturian has done what no reward chart ever managed. Golf replies that the composer simply wrote better tunes than any reward chart could offer.

The app's beginner piano course offers an arrangement of Ivan Sings, and Golf practises it slowly, listening for a singing tone in the right hand while the left hand keeps a quiet, steady pattern below. He has learned that a melody sounds kinder when the accompaniment stays softer.

His father, who loves football, says Khachaturian's story is like an athlete who joins a team late but trains harder than everyone. Golf repeats that to himself when practice gets tough. He started at ten; Khachaturian started at nineteen. Anyone can learn piano if they keep showing up.

In his school music lessons the class has started listening to orchestral music each Friday, and Golf asked for Sabre Dance. His teacher took the chance to explain ostinato, a pattern that repeats again and again, and Golf noticed the same idea in his own accompaniment.

Golf's dream is to play piano at the next sports day, perhaps a simplified Sabre Dance with the school band, while his classmates race. For now, his daily AI piano lessons and a little canal-side practice after homework are helping him play music that feels as energetic as a relay race.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Who was Aram Khachaturian? A: Aram Khachaturian (1903–1978) was an Armenian composer born in Tbilisi, Georgia. He is famous for the ballets Gayane, which includes the Sabre Dance, and Spartacus, and for music full of Armenian folk rhythms and colours.

Q: What is Adventures of Ivan? A: It is a set of short piano pieces for children by Khachaturian, also known as the first book of his Children's Album. Titles include Ivan Sings and Ivan Can't Go Out Today, and they suit early-intermediate learners.

An online piano teaching application is as useful as the habits it builds. Pair an AI piano teaching app with a fixed practice time, let the piano teaching app choose the next short passage, and piano teaching with AI turns the online piano lessons app into a calm daily routine. More students learn piano online today because a good piano learning course can now be paired with an AI online piano course that listens and responds. Teachers who combine piano teaching with general music teaching often find that students learn music more easily when they understand why a passage works.
